Congratulations President Elect Obama

Wow, we have a President Obama. No matter how you voted, it would be difficult to deny the positive psychological effect of last night's election.  America is not the same place today that it was yesterday.

I can only think of two presidents that have accomplished so much on the very day of their election, meaning the country was different the day after their election than it was the day before just by the virtue of them being elected.  The first example is the election of George Washington. The very act of electing Washington signified to the world that the United States was a sovereign country. The second president whose election redefined the country on election day is of course Barack Obama. The election of Barack Obama makes official what most of us already knew; that in this country an individual can reach to the loftiest of heights regardless of race. This is a powerful idea that can't help but permeate the parts of our culture that percieve a glass ceiling as to how far they can go in this country.

The 08 presidential election of Obama gives new meaning to this sentence in the preamble of our Declaration of Independence: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. Though this has always been a truth, it hasn't always been self evident in this country. It was nice to see that yesterday we as a majority of this country actually believe it. It will be interesting to see how the effects of this election will ripple throughout our culture for the next four years as well as the rest of the world.

It's also interesting to note that Obama handily won Virginia that just over a century ago was headquarters to the confederacy that fought so hard to maintain the principles of slavery. The photograph I saw of a front yard in the south flying the stars and bars of the confederacy as well as hosting an Obama campaign sign right next to it says it all. We have come along way.

I only hope things aren't too far gone for him to be effective. I just know that in four years, people won't remember the economy crashed 2 months before he was elected. He will be pinned with as if he caused it.
